The women of Britain, from nurses and professors to painters and decorators, have come together to choose their must-have buys this autumn

The nurses’ style picks: cosy coats and leather trainers

“As a nurse, I just like giving people the love and support they need,” says Beauty, second from left, a healthcare assistant. “I’m the person to put my arm around them to help them feel better. We all need a warm hug sometimes.”

“I think any nurse would say that feeling cosy and comfortable after a long shift is exactly what you need,” adds Ellen, centre back, a senior matron at Leicester Royal Infirmary. “Which is why we’ve all chosen warm coats and comfy trainers.”

Poppy’s style pick: aviator jacket

“I love being outside all the time, it’s one of the best things about my job,” says apprentice gardener Poppy. Even when she’s not working, you’ll most likely find her outdoors. “I love taking my rescue dog, Cloris, out for walks at the weekend, which is why I love this jacket. It’s warm and tough enough for long autumn walks, but cool enough for drinks in the pub with friends on the way home too.”

Caroline’s style pick: winter boots

“I think one of my favourite things about being a painter and decorator is getting to drive my big white van around town – seriously,” laughs Caroline. For her, clothes are all about easy practicality. “Of course I wear overalls for work, so, being on my feet all day, it’s all about the shoes for me – and these boots are brilliant: comfy, well-made, warm and so cool!”

Janet’s style pick: soft Tencel shirt

“My friends joke about me always being dressed up for the school run,” says Janet. “But I find it as quick to pull on a dress as it is to grab jeans and a sweater in the morning. I like feeling good in my clothes, but I definitely need style on speed dial! I really love this pretty Tencel shirt – it feels gorgeous and soft to wear and the colour is mega-flattering.”

Ffion’s and Ann’s style picks: pussy-bow blouse and Evie trousers

“I’m passionate about getting everyone doing sport, regardless of ability,” says Ffion, left, sports officer at Swansea University. “Until a few months ago, I was a student at the university, so this pussy-bow blouse is perfect to take my style from student to faculty.”

“I'm in and out of meetings all day, whether that’s with government officials to lobby for changes in policy, or talking with families who are dealing with the fallout of mental-health issues," says Ann, professor of public health and psychiatry at Swansea University. “So I have to look professional – these trousers are the perfect combo of looking smart and feeling great.”
